It’s definitely a complicated situation. I’m also for hands off Iran not because I like the regime in any way but because the US and Israeli governments are playing dice with geopolitics right now. How do they know a worse government won’t take Khamenei’s place? What if this triggers a larger war? How many people are going to die if the gamble fails? Khamenei absolutely deserved what he got, but this is not the right way to give the Iranian people their country back
Americans were quite loud about the civilian uprisings this year, what are you talking about? There are a lot of people who’ve been rightly outraged about both because both are immoral And let’s not forget that Iran was also under a dictatorship before 1979 under the Shah, it was just a different dictatorship than the one there is now Iranians deserve a real democracy, not to be controlled by a theocratic regime or a US/British puppet
A lot of people who are speaking out today also were speaking out then, but I also think it is normal to have a greater level of outrage when it is your own government killing innocent people than when it is something horrible happening in a different contra that you are less connected to Yes, both deserve outrage, but there is one that is happening right now and it is only just beginning
Even if this was truly the only option, I don’t trust this particular administration to handle the transfer of power properly. Look what they did in Venezuela. Instead of putting someone pro-democracy in charge, they installed another authoritarian dictator whose only benefit was being willing to give the US oil. That is in no way what the Venezuelan people wanted. I sincerely do hope that at the end of this Iran gets a true independent democracy, but I have serious doubts
They don’t want the US to go to bomb their schools and communities and they don’t want the IRGC to just be replaced with another US-backed dictator. Even in cases where the US does allow some semblance of democracy, if that democracy leads to nationalizing oil or anything that’ll hurt US corporate profits, they’ll orchestrate a coup like they did with Iran in 1953, setting the country down the path towards the IR in the first place I mean I really hope for the best I just don’t see it happening
No but like I’m saying the protests in Iran aren’t a monolith and Iran is a big country There are some people at some of these protests that are calling for the return of the Shah, that is not the collective view of the protesters. The US media highlights those people over others because the Shah is aligned with the US There are also a lot of people at these same protests chanting “death to the dictator, be it Shah or Ayatollah” but that isn’t getting the same coverage in American media
