I want to go on Birthright but my school doesn’t sponsor a trip. The Hillel has offered to connect we with another school, but I’m nervous to sign up bc I won’t know anyone. Any advice?

I say go with strangers, it’s fun, you’ll meet people. But make sure the school you go with matches your vibe - go with a party school if you’re a partier, go on a religious trip if you’re religious, etc

i’m sorry but what gives you the right to tell someone what to do or not to do? if you don’t agree with birthright, you don’t have to sign up. nobody is holding a gun to your head. but other people want to go.

The problem is that the people paying for the trip inviting you to come are pulling the trigger on other peoples heads to kill or expel them in the hopes that you or some other Jew whose never been there might move into their house or something.

Let’s analogize this to another crime against humanity where I know you already recognize the victims as human. Would you be comfortable going on a trip to Russia sponsored by the Kremlin

Birthright doesn’t exist in a vacuum. People can critique it and thus participation in it, especially those more affected by it (Arabs, Palestinians, etc)

Let’s analogize it with a more accurate representation, A trip for originally displaced native Americans who now have had to build generations in diaspora to see the Americas and land they were able to buy back or the government gave back. Jews are native to Israel, Palestine is a colonizer name to erase Judea and before that the kingdom of Israel and before that the 12 tribes. Do your history homework

This isn’t an ask for a lecture on morality of birthright. I am an anxious teenager asking for advice before signing up alone for a trip. Go debate the morality/ethicality of birthright somewhere else. I come to this page for a safe space, not to be harassed.

This analogy doesn’t work, given that (1) Palestinians are the victims of settler colonialism, similar to indigenous peoples, (2) not every Jewish person is from Eretz Yisrael, but other places (Pale of Settlement, Ethiopia, Yemen, etc), (3) your history is bad

Your actions are political, and people will critique you for it (rightly or not). You’re not being harassed. If you don’t wanna interact with people, you can block them

Every ethnic Jew is from Israel tho. It’s called the “diaspora” for a reason, and it’s like saying Europeans who have been in the US for 400 years are Native American.

me when i rewrite history to justify a nationalist and colonial project: don’t worry, it’s somehow different from all of the other fascist and supremacist projects!

yes, people can critique it and i did not say otherwise. i said don’t tell people what to do. very big difference.

history can also exist upon documentation, artifacts, etc. things that are not just word of mouth. is the diary of anne frank a piece of history that exists upon contested ground?

dont want to get into an argument but feels important to note here that birthright is funded by private donors (mostly american individuals and foundations) and not the Israeli govt. also the goal is generally not to convince people to move there
