I like the rule “if they can’t change it in 30 seconds don’t make fun of it” for example someone can’t change their weight or physical appearance in 30 seconds, but they can quit working for a fascist regime in 30 seconds

Depends how long they’ve lived a certain way without changing it. Like I’m sorry but if someone is in their 40s, living in filth, wearing raggedy clothes, barely working, and not ever showering and making themselves look somewhat presentable, an been doing all this for like a decade, then we should absolutely judge them. We gotta draw the line on these somewhere. There’s a difference between going through tough times and simply living like trash for the fuck of it

It really just depends on your relationship to the person though, and also how harsh the comment is. I think the biggest thing is really if you have an understanding of their situation, and how open they are about the stuff. I realize this is like a general rule but sometimes it really isn’t that big of a deal. Like two people from fucked up families can low key bond over making fun of their situations but it’s because they both get it.

When you insult people for physical characteristics, people you likely know will hear that and internalize those words as if you had said it to them. That goes for being fat, bald, having acne, etc.

I realize some people don’t agree with this line of thinking either but I personally appreciate if I get made fun of by my friends. Like if I get a bad haircut, or my outfit doesn’t look right I don’t mind if they make fun bc I will know better next time. I think it’s important to understand your flaws, only way to fix them is to recognize them, or you can accept it and then the joke shouldn’t matter.

default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #35 1w

If it crosses a line for you then say so, it’s really only messed up if you have said you don’t want it to be mentioned and they continue doing it. I think it comes down to like I said before the relationship to the person. If they are strangers then yeah that stuff is basically all off the table, and it’s usually better to do self deprecating humor. If you are friends and they make jokes about topics you asked them not to after you ask them then they aren’t really your friends.

I’m saying you can make fun of people in ICE for being in ICE. You don’t have to make fun of them for being fat/bald/short. There are plenty of decent people with those qualities who are going to hear those insults and feel bad about themselves.
