i used to think ppl mixing up their/there/they’re was bad, but now i see the same thing happening w/ are/our, using dose in place of does, loose instead of lose… i s2g this is bc they quit teaching phonics 💔

It’s also because of the degradation of the language; most of these common mistakes are caused by people treating different words as homophones. I believe (but I’m not sure) that they’re, their, and there fall into this category. Does and dose are just cause people can’t spell.

Ironically phonics wouldn’t help with homophones like this but the fact they just neglected reading by telling people to guess the word from context clues and districts banned spelling tests bc they were unfair and etc etc

I’ve been their, I mean their our people that have been saying this and there right! They’re was once a time when are generation knew how to spell properly. But it dosent change the fact of your post.

oh yeah the they’re/their/there issue is less of a phonics thing than the other ones I mentioned. i do think the lack of phonics in schools has been a big contributor to the increase in spelling errors. it’s hard to sound words out when you never got taught which letters/letter combos make which sounds

I’m not sure what the explanation for unnecessary apostrophes and forgetting to change word endings is though. seeing a lot of stuff like “frys” instead of “fries” and “pony’s” instead of “ponies” etc.

I have no idea why we transitioned to sight words tbh it’s proven to suck. I think the apostrophes thing is just autocorrecting from the former problem (frys).

oh i meant the phonics thing more abt the second half. loose vs lose and does vs dose aren’t homophones. understanding phonics also helps w/ spelling

Those practices were promoted over an understanding of phonics, which would help differentiate between “dose” and “does”, which are not homophones but still mixed up as if they were
