God is merciful. God is also just. Without free will there could be no willful love of god, but having free will means there is a capacity for sin and bad things to happen. If a candy bar costs 5$ and a kid eats the candy bar, they owe 5$. Similarly, if a person sins and the cost of sin is death, then the person owes their life. If a person ate no candy bars pays for the kids candy bar, the debt is resolved and paid for. Similarly if a man, Jesus, lived a sinless life, he can pay the cost ofsin
dont forget that two members of EVERY species somehow managed to coordinate to get on a wooden boat in the middle east. the predators and prey somehow lived other in harmony. they somehow all had enough food to eat and water to drink. from anywhere between 40-400 days 😐😐😐 its the mental gymnastics for me😭
Hey I appreciate the good faith explanation but I’ve been reading the Bible for a class and I read about David’s story. David got to kill Bathsheba’s husband and got off scott free. In fact, he was blessed with a fruitful kingdom and powerful lineage. This part kind of ticked me off and I was curious about your thoughts
I have no credentials so I understand taking what I have to say with a grain of salt, but in the Old Testament there are many examples like that where killing is forgiven and commanded. The journey of the Israelites out of Egypt was concluded with the conquering of Canaan through war. My explanation of this is that in the Old Testament, God made the Israelites his people, while the people of other nations followed different gods. Similarly, Uriah the Hittite was not an Israelite so he was not
One of gods people. It wasn’t until the coming of Jesus that people of all nations were declared gods people. I will not speak on reasoning or justification because truthfully I’m not sure and don’t want to give you an answer that I do not believe in, but this is my thought on the matter
I do not view Jesus as evidence of Gods mistake but rather evidence of his mercy. God gave us a covenant with him to follow to live in accordance with him, and littered all throughout the Old Testament is time and time again where humanity has failed and strayed from God. Even Moses did not follow Gods commandments and even Moses was punished for this by not getting to see the promised land he led the Israelites to. Because there was so much sin among humanity and no one that could live up to
The old covenant made, God made a new covenant through Jesus: that all who accept Jesus as lord and savior may not perish but have eternal life. God sent Jesus to earth to lead a blameless life, show humanity its shortcomings and how to live in accordance with God, then was sacrificed to pay the debt humanity incurred and fulfill the new covenant in him.
But changing the covenant to accommodate for others is still an instance of god changing his mind. I was under the impression that god was supposed to be omniscient and all-knowing. Is this not god being like “yknow what I was wrong about humanity, let me switch things up”? And wouldn’t that mean he made a mistake that he was correcting?
He is. In the Old Testament he outlined what a moral life was and was not, and gave humanity the knowledge that the wages of sin were death. He didn’t change the covenant he made a new one. I know that sounds semantic but it isn’t. The Bible is a lot of baby talk to point to a few key things, that there is a creator of the universe who made humans in his image, that humanity took this for granted and turned to sin, that God could not let sin go unpunished, but had mercy on humanity so he sent
Jesus to cover the cost of humanity’s sin, and that because of Jesus, we are saved from dying in our sin. I will not speak on Gods timing or Gods plan, but these are what are at work in the time between the old and New Testament, and I wish I had a more complete answer for you, but all I know is that I am a sinner and Christ is my savior, and that God knows more than I. I have only been Christian for 2 years now, it’s a lifetime journey to understand more completely, so please excuse me for that
In 2 Samuel chapter 12 he was cursed because he sinned but God kept his promise for his lineage. Since he did that his son died, and I wouldn’t consider that scott free, but the covenant was upheld and he was able to continue his lineage. I can see how you could see it as him not getting punished but I would argue that he had a worse punishment than death.
