I know AI is bad for the environment but I genuinely don’t think one person using it or not will make any difference, and chat gpt does not have as big of an effect as the big corps using AI. I don’t think we have the money or power to stop anything

This is the same argument that can be used to discourage voting, not polluting, etc. and to be fair, it's not wrong. We don't have much power as individuals. But the best thing we can do is try to get other individuals together to form a movement that maybe actually can get something done. Honestly I'm less worried about the current environmental impacts and more worried about what the future could look like if unfettered AI development continues.

With voting I can see your point but with pollution and the negative effects of ai on the environment it’s unfair to blame the average individual trying to get by and make their lives easier when the massive corporations responsible for most of the damage from this stuff get off scot free without any consequences

Well for what it's worth I don't blame the average individual much. The corporations are obviously the real problem. I just think we should be doing what we can to fight back. I don't like the doomer mindset that everything is inevitable so we shouldn't do anything. If there's even a 1% chance of saving the planet it's still worth trying.

See the thing is that the major corps are also incentivized to find less damaging ai, because truly it’s their planet to. Even if they could escape to mars, your status is completely irrelevant once you are surrounded by all the elites yk? If everyone is rich and elite, then nobody is and that would be the situation is the gov underground bunker or the spaceship headed to mars. Does that make sense how I wrote that?

The average person voting (in theory) DOES matter. However, I don’t think voting genuinely makes much of a difference as an independent (it’s two wings of the same bird) and the pollution the general public does is genuinely nothing compared to navy ships I’m so serious rn, as someone with military family. Every nation pollutes the ocean with their navy ships and that’s a lot of stuff they take on there
