That’s one of those things where it varies from person to person. I learned about the term through its origin of being an actual diagnosis so to me it’s offensive because I see it as ableist. Some don’t care and even refer to themselves as such because they fit the term diagnosically. Since there’s such a varied response to the word it’s best not to use it in general unless in private with someone who’s expressed that they don’t find it offensive like yourself.

Neither am I, also cause I’m not one but it’s Boston slang we say it so often we don’t even hear it when we do. Also if you are acting out of the norm for yourself, like purposely slower we use it to ask if you’re okay without actually asking using the words are you okay.

I personally think it’s fine. Im neurodivergent and don’t give a fuck. Mental retardation was the medical term, drater backwards is french for late. So i dont see how it’s a slur. Just dont be an asshole

This is a slur against neurodivergent people, especially autistic people, since it targets neurodivergent traits. That wasn’t its origin, but that’s where it is now. You can, instead, just say idiot, stupid, dumbass, or any other non-slur word or combo of words. There’s no need to use the r slur

That's fine. No one is ever required to be offended by anything. You should be glad that something that's a problem for others isn't a problem for you. However I feel like this sort of thing is usually presented as a pick me take. I hope you don't use the fact that you're not offended to invalidate the people in your community that are.

I am actually mentally ‘tarded and I honestly don’t care. 99% of the time it’s not actually being used in that way anyway, at least not in my experience:

Yeah there’s definitely a regional aspect to it. Where I am the word is being used as an insult 99.9% of the time

Yep absolutely it’s regional, the north it’s 50/50 could be an insult or a genuine inquiry into your mental state, depends on context.

I live in the north (NJ) and I’ve literally never heard it used outside of people using it maliciously or kids who genuinely don’t understand it’s weight

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but in Boston we aren’t too concerned with the vestigial of New York. Unless you’ve visited the southern parts of Boston and Boston proper, you don’t understand how much it is said.

I went to college in Massachusetts 30 minutes from Boston and have visited Boston years ago before that. Also I know it’s a joke but it’s only the tippy top of NJ that’s shitty and NY vestigial

I’m neurodivergent and I do give a fuck. Mental retardation is no longer the medical term, it’s now called intellectual disability, there’s no medical reason to use it anymore. The reason it’s a slur is the sheer amount of neurodivergent, especially autistic, people who’ve had that word used against them specifically because of neurodivergent traits. I personally have never had it used against me, but I understand the harm it’s done to people who have had it used against them

my fraternity gave me the most fucked up pledge name imaginable that specifically called out my disability. It enraged me and can still fuel me with resentment. I can’t feed into that for my own good. Thats why I said I don’t give a fuck. I should have clarified I don’t think it’s fine to say in a hateful derogatory way.

I’m sorry your fraternity did that to you, that’s really shitty. You said before you don’t understand how it’s a slur though, do you now?
