According to some estimates more Japanese died at Okinawa than at Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined, yet I still hear ppl argue a mainland invasion would’ve been more moral. I really don’t get it

I know this is a late response but I have thoughts about this. Assuming you mean that Okinawa is considered more morally acceptable than Hiroshima and Nagasaki even though more people died there than in those places combined, there are reasons that people might feel that way.

1.) Okinawa was attacked as a military location. The fight was brought there (from the beaches) because it had a military presence. It was intentional to try to take out some of their military because the Japanese were doing so well in WWII. And because it was a military fighting a military, it would be more moral because that was the job. That was the intended purpose of a military.

2.) Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not militarily only places. And we dropped two huge, horrible bombs on them. And without warning. So not only did we attack civilians, which is morally reprehensible, but we didn’t give them real time to escape or take cover (though we know that wouldn’t have really helped).

Additionally, something that I think about, is that we dropped two bombs on them, and at the time they were our ONLY ones like that. And we were threatening them, telling them to stop or we’d drop more of these new, earth shattering things on them. We were going about it like we had more and like we wanted to kill their people who may have hated the war and had nothing to do with it directly.

So they could have not stopped and hoped we had no more (which we didn’t but they didn’t know that. The American people didn’t even know that), but risk more of their civilians dying, or they could stop and be sure that no more of their people would die.
