The northern Italians don’t like southern Italians. Southern Italy is traditionally the more rural and poorer part of Italy so there was a lot of internal factors immediately following Italian unification such as discrimination against southerners. A combination of poverty + discrimination (among other factors) caused many to look for opportunities to live better elsewhere
