I think the ideals of freedom, opportunity, and democracy that are country was built on is important to recognize. And now we still have the ability to vote for and talk about what we wish to promote. The US is a first of its kind in world history and you can disagree and vote against whatever modern politics you want but you should still be proud to be an American.

I think it is important to remember that those ideals were constantly espoused. I think it is important to recognize that the story of America is one of great ideals that constantly got corrupted/have been failed to live up to. I think there are ideals to be proud of sure but there’s a whole lot to be disappointed in as well. I think saying that you should “have to be proud of your country” to teach history is honestly really dangerous slippery slope that allows for the work of academics to 1/2

I think you can tell by the general tone of my posts that’s not at all what I was saying. In fact I’m talking about the polar opposite which is when history is produced that puts the voices and stories of those on the margins in the center which then gets called “woke” and revisionist history because it doesn’t fit the nostalgia lens of history. I think everyone else got that.

This doesn’t just apply to America. I’m sure a Kurd wouldn’t be eager to be proud of Turkish history, a Chechen in Russia, etc
