M 23 5’10” 190lbs noob Can I cut and build muscle at the same time? My maintenance is 2400 but I think I can easily do 1700 by cutting junk and snacks. I can also fast but at what point is the deficit too much to gain muscle? I’d love to do both together

Yes, its called body recomposition. I would start off eating at or slightly below maintenance before increasing your deficit more, as you can still be in a deficit so long as you walk enough, around the 7-12k range. However, I would not go past around 500 cals for a deficit as it is harder to recover in a deficit even with volume accounted for as your body simply does not have the energy it would have at maintenance or surplus. I would stop the deficit once you’ve reached a specific look you’ve

had in mind, say having visible abs or the dorito outline. If you use the number on the scale as your goal I think its fine but the reality is that you may not be satisfied with what you’re seeing between the mirror and scale. Give yourself a specific timeframe so you don’t prolong the cut. Once you’re satisfied you can always decrease the deficit or return to maintenance/slight surplus depending on goals. 0.8-1g of protein, 0.3-0.5g of fat, 1-2g of carb, and 0.5-0.75oz of water per lb of bw.

I would focus on weekly trends when determining whether or not to further decrease the deficit. I would eat as much as my body allows me to while still being able to shed fat as to make it easier. I would take weekly progress pics with the same lighting fasted in the morning, and choose a form of cardio that is relatively easy while still bringing heart rate up for 25-45 mins 3-5x a week.
