I learned how to bench by asking the strongest guys in the gym for a spot. They all knew immediately that I was a beginner, and as soon as I started asking questions they were all but falling over themselves to teach me. We all started somewhere, and the opinions of anyone who would judge you for being a beginner don’t matter. If you want somewhere to start, start with the bar until it feels comfortable and add 10lbs total (5 per side) each week until you hit your working weights
*A working weight is whatever weight you can lift for 4-10 reps before failing. Find the range that feels best for you, and aim for that range each set (for me, that’s 4-6 reps for 2-3 sets). Each week, if you either hit the top end of your rep range for all three sets or if you go over your rep range in your first set, up the weight by another 5-10 pounds until you’re only able to hit the bottom end of your ideal rep range. Experiment with what works for you and progress will follow
