You cannot gain 40lbs over 5 months and not expect most of it to be fat. Maybe 4-12lbs of actual muscle, but this depends on how consistent you are and how advanced of a lifter you were.

You can gain muscle on a calorie deficit, it is just considerably more difficult to accomplish. If you were to do a body recomp and get to around 12-15% bf, and then try a lean bulk, you would have better results.
