I read somewhere that excess protein above your daily needs/goal just turns into glucose. If this is true, then why do carbs matter? Sorry if this is a dumb question

The body can also only handle so much protein and excess of it is stored as fat

Yes, protein will be turned into glucose (via gluconeogenesis) when the body runs low on blood glucose or if there’s a large excess. This process is slow, requires energy, and not all amino acids can be used, making it a non ideal energy source. You need carbs because they are most easily utilized for energy, and can be stored as glycogen (which is released for quick energy during workouts)

But if you’re overeating protein and undereating carbs, wouldn’t it balance out?

I knoww that’s my thinking but I feel like it’s better to be balanced with both then no fat storage. Also u can’t live off soley protein and eventually ur gonna get so ickef out from it ur gonna go WAY overboard with carbs and go in the opposite direction

By “balance out”, yes you won’t become hypoglycemic but you’ll have less energy available (especially for workouts) bc the conversion of protein into glucose is slow and demand driven (when you run out of usable carbs). It’s better to have carbs that can be stored as glycogen and used during high impact activity. Excess protein is stored as fat, not glycogen, and can really only be utilized during low impact activity. So without carbs you’ll “gas out” much faster in your workouts
