Do machines and the smith machines count as lifting weights?

Yes. You’re still moving weight where you can progressively overload. Only difference between smith & machines compared to free weights is that you use recruit a lot more stabilizing muscles for free weight

So it’s good to have a workout plan that incorporates both free weights and machines. Preferably use free weights for compound movements
