BMI was developed based on studies on typical white males lol. Doesn’t take into account for BF%, muscle mass, bone density, gender, race, etc.

BMI doesn’t represent anything about physical health or capabilities and is a ratio only applicable to a small minority of people smh absolute bull

If you're actually 23% bf at a 36 bmi that's extremely impressive, but excessive bodyweight can cause health complications whether it's fat or muscle, and the drugs it would take to get that ffmi wouldn't help either (your body fat is higher than you think)

Smth like 98% of the NFL is obese lol. The equation is literally just weight divided by height, and doesn’t account for muscle vs fat, bone density, sex, race, or literally anything. It was created in the mid 1800s by a Belgian mathematician, and he literally only made it so that he could quantify what the average man was, nothing related to health. It’s horrifically outdated.

yeah bro don't worry about BMI- literally every big bodybuilder is considered obese on the BMI scale. It's a very subpar way of measuring healthy wright, you're doing just fine

It literally takes gender into account

It’s more of a guesstimate for women. Like I said, the study for the original development of the BMI scale was done on typical white men. Doesn’t take into account for women’s bodily proportions (like larger breasts, buttocks, shorter average height, higher BF% for reproduction, etc)

when i got my degree in nutrition they said not to use BMI unless clients asked about it specifically because it’s basically useless but sure i guess they changed that

What do you use instead

essentially the components of BMI, but not combined. usually i use an omron body fat monitor, a handheld device that measures BF%, water retention and muscle tissue by volume. nutritional profiling also. then its just a matter of practical assessment of function and health

How do you feel about the body scan tech they use at places like club4?

The racial difference they didn’t account for it is lowkey hitting home right now. Asian women at the same height and weight as white women can be overfat and unhealthy while the white woman is healthy. BMI can only get you into the ballpark of reality, nothing more.

I mean shit, i’m 185 pounds at 5’9” and my doctor looked me dead in the eye and told me that I was slightly overweight and would recommend some slight dieting. I showed him my abs and he DOUBLED DOWN on the BMI bullshit. I changed my doctor after that.

Yep. I think that’s a huge part of the reason y the beauty standards around weight is so toxic in Asia. I’ve personally lived in China for 6 years and I’m 5’4. The ideal weight for me is about 97lbs or 44kgs, or a bmi of 16.7, which is classified as severely underweight according to the bmi scale. I would probably look average at that weight for my height as an Asian.
