if i'm a high body fat percentage right now should i start by trying to build muscle or trying to lose fat? my overall goal is to become leaner

If you’re fat and a beginner you can do both at once. Lift weights, keep protein high, eat in a deficit

Find out what your calorie deficit is and diet at that. Do you wanna look leaner or be leaner causer muscle weighs more than fat.

gaining muscle in a deficit is generally going to be harder than at maintenance or in a surplus, but it gets much easier the less training experience you have or the more body fat you have so if you check both boxes you shouldn’t have much issue

Find calorie deficit, eat at that but still get 15+ grams of protein in each meal, exercise accordingly. It’s not about what you do the first time, it’s that you come back and do it again and again.
