When I cut I lose a bunch of muscle. I eat more protein than I need with a calorie deficit. Why? Any tips?

Make sure you’re really pushing yourself hard while you’re in the deficit, your body will throw muscle away if you don’t force it to stay. Also make sure you’re dialed on sleep and drinking water; seems simple but it’s a game changer.

if your diet is lower in carbs, then you lose a lot of the water weight (held by glycogen), which will make you look smaller (like the opposite of creatine). if you see this “muscle loss” earlier in the cut, it’s likely just water weight. carbs are also important for building and maintaining muscle regardless

Probably not what u wanna hear but u probably didn’t have as much muscle as u anticipated. It’s pretty hard to lose muscle when cutting unless ur severely undereating or undertraining

Everyone’s made super good points. Another question, do you actually track your calories and protein? If you’re doing it in your head or just winging it, you’re probably undereating. I for sure was for the longest time

I’m cutting rn, have lost a lot of flab around my stomach, not sure if I’ve lost muscle or not I’m like 5 weeks in. But echoing what #1 said, you gotta push really hard. Sounds gross but i grunt and can’t help some spit flying outta my mouth when pushing really really hard
