I just got out of a manipulative multi year relationship and I’m not happy with my current body. Instead of crying I hit the gym today. I’m going to try to better myself physically as I’ve always wanted to. Tips are appreciated.

Mostly make sure to track calories and try and get 10k steps in a day

The only gym tricks are consistency, calories, sleep, steps, food. Use AI if you are lost. It knows what it’s talking about

You’re completely right on the calorie tracking, I’ve been focusing a lot on eating better but I need to lock down on macro counts. Thank you!

I want to definitely tone myself but also build muscle. It’s mostly my gut that I’m most upset with

If you haven’t been in the gym, you could probably just eat roughly what you’ve been eating calorie wise (make sure you’re eating 0.8-1g protein/lb you weigh) and just hit the weights. You’ll probably build muscle and shed fat in the meantime while you get back into the swing of things. Once you’ve recomped and you’re back “in” the gym, you can decide if you want to gain muscle or lose fat. That’s what I’d do at least

As a former fat guy, losing the stomach is #1 priority. Do that, reassess when you have abs.

Also sleep well and get adequate protein while doing progressive overload at the gym

if i may, a lot of people hate the word tone. if you want to “tone” it’s called body recomp. you’re losing weight/fat and gaining some weight back, which is muscle. Toning can’t happen on its own, to me it’s not even a word i’d use in the gym. I’d look into Body Recomposition. It also limits the loose skin if you do it steady and not too fast! (I’ve lost about 45lbs but gained about 10lbs back in muscle)
