Hi, does anyone have advice for a first time gym goer? I’m super self conscious and that’s been stopping me from going to the gym. Should I go with friends? Or do stuff at home?

Going with friends is great! The thing that works best for me, though is to have a plan/routine, with backups in case the machines that I want are taken

What helped me is only using the treadmill the first week. Second week used the treadmill and found a corner where I could do dumbbell workouts that I had looked up before. After 2 weeks of that I made it a goal to try at least two machines depending on the day.

hey! i was in your shoes just a few months ago. you could go with friends if it helps you with exposure first starting, but try not to depends on them in the long term as it won’t be viable with building discipline/consistency, as you need to eventually get used to feeling comfortable enough to go alone. the biggest tip is: planning w/ intention. this means going into the gym knowing what you’re going to do or try, which can help you ease into the environment with more certainty

It also really helped looking the least busy times that I was available to go!

i would actually recommend looking into first “programming a split” to understand what you need to know as a beginner getting into weightlifting. my favorite for beginners are PPL or UL. since it’s your first time doing these exercises, tutorial videos will also help a lot while trying them, and some influencers who are great for this and getting into fitness in general are: TNF, Jeff Nippard, and Ryan Jewers (you could also just search on TikTok tutorials on exercises).
