Interesting, she wants to extend menopause so people can have kids later in life. I would love a period every 3 months

i would love this if successful because i hate having periods bur also because i know so many women who gave up their dreams to have kids before it was "too late," we would be able to see so many more women being able to live out their dreams of having a job while also not sacrificing their dream of having a family

I have always wondered if this was possible! I’m so excited to read the research and follow along their progress!!!! ❤️✨ this would be life changing for so many people and countries honestly, could be a great solution for all the women who want to wait until their 40’s for pregnancy without IVF or other procedures needed

A woman is born with a fixed number of eggs. In a standard monthly cycle, the body recruits a number of follicles, but typically only one egg is released. By reducing the number of cycles to four per year, the goal is to slow the rate at which these ovarian reserves are consumed.

wouldnt periods be a lot more painful since it would be more buildup? and they would last longer as well. the uterine lining would be THICKK

Wait so in theory since I haven’t had my period in years due to birth control does that mean if I got off it I would be super fertile and still have all my eggs?

I mean why not just aim to stop it indefinitely?

This will also mean cleaner longer non fertile.

With current birth control you can already make your period happen once every 3 months and it doesn’t make people fertile longer. The eggs still age and get deformities. Unless there’s more to it than this summary, I don’t see how this woman is doing something any different

Stop periods as a whole? Like, render everyone infertile…? 💀

it wouldn't render you infertile, you can stop your period indefinitely with hormonal birth control and start it back up whenever you want. the pnly reason that's not the most common treatment is cuz it doesn't work for everyone and for some people it fucks them up

That’s not extending menopause, it’s slowing down women’s hormonal cycles which effectively does the opposite. This would actually shorten menopause since women would have eggs to release for longer. This would be similar to the depo shot which can be used to get your period once every three months.

That’s what birth controls currently do 💀

No, cos the goal would be to slow the cycle as a whole.

You can stop your periods entirely by continuously taking birth control

Exactly!

The uterine lining thickens specifically due to hormones rather than actual time spend without shedding it!

Yes while also preserving the integrity of the eggs since the estrogen causing ovulation is vital to maintaining the health!

But it does impact fertility for some women especially when taken for long periods of time, just because the eggs aren’t receiving the hormones necessary to preserve their integrity. But one of the studies this Doctor did was about restoring egg integrity by injecting stem cells into the ovaries and it’s been successful so far! Completely reversing infertility in animals with no known complications of the offspring as of now!

You can stop your period by taking birth control

That’s wild 💀 coming from a woman who had a hysterectomy… taking birth control is a much much easier option to not having your period with less health complications

well i mean i don’t want kids, i hate my period, im a lesbian so i dont need pregnancy prevention, and i dont want to take birth control bc of the effects it can do to you

You realise you’ll have to take hormones for the rest of your life to be able to live with those complications, right?

i have some news for u abt the effects of removing a whole fucking organ 😭

upvote 10 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> murdermushroom 1w

actually that’s only if you get your ovaries removed along with it and even then it’s not for the rest of your life, just until you hit the age age range people usually start having menopause. i just said id rather get that than take birth control, not that i have decided to do so. especially without doing any research, its just an option im considering.

it’s not like i’m going to have it cut out in a dark alley tonight, ofc i’ll do my research before getting a part of me removed. i’m not stupid. like i said before, it’s just an option im considering and would not even think of following through until ive done more research and know its what i want.

Dude what side effects are you so scared of from birth control if you don’t care about fertility? Is this a fear of weight gain that sometimes happens for women on birth control?

upvote 4 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #16 1w

No unfortunately. The eggs degrade over time without the normal hormones your body produces, which is why many birth controls have side effects of fertility issues when used consistently for prolonged periods. You might have more eggs over all for your age but the quality of them might lead to other problems.

But this doctor also did other research about repairing eggs by injecting stem cells into ovaries and it had completely reversed infertility in the monkeys had healthy offspring! So there is a chance that her other research could lead to extending fertility in that way which is awesome too

Ohhh I got it. Honestly I don’t want to have children so I’m actually not too worried about the quality of fertility

By the way, I had a hysterectomy and left my ovaries and my period still sucks. You still have pain, hormone still suck, still have bloating and digestive issues, etc. still cramps too, just not blood. The side effects of the surgery are also nothing to ignore, any penetration could be painful and you are at higher risks of other things like vaginal prolapse, incontinence, bladder issues, etc. it also is problematic to not know where you are at in your cycle because medical tests and things

Anonymous replying to -> #17 1w

You shouldn’t say that you would rather get a hysterectomy than go onto birth control without understanding the risks of hysterectomies, it’s actually really ridiculous to do 💀 unless you’ve already tried birth controls and know they cause you a lot of problems or are at high risks of bad complications, there is no reason to be so ready to take extreme measures over a very common medication.

That’s fair, also something of note is that your ovaries themselves stop functioning properly during menopause as many organs function differently with age, so your menopause might still arrive at the same time even with more eggs. But you can use things like estrogen creams and things to help relieve menopause (got fully fda approved and black box removed last year I think)

So she is not saying that birth control is the answer, her research is going way beyond that. A headline is obviously not going to be able to get into specifics so I really recommend actually reading the article about this before passing judgement 💀
