I’m cat sitting for this old lady and she literally lives in squalor. Her apartment is fucking disgusting, it reeks of cat piss, and there is old rotting food everywhere, it is awful.

When you go over there for the remainder of your visits, wear a n95 or a respirator and cloths you don’t care about. In the meantime, I’d contact social services and say you are concerned about her well being and request an elder care checkup or something

She’s in the hospital so she needs me to take care of her cat. But they won’t discharge her so she keeps needing me to take care of the cat, and I just can’t go into that apartment anymore. I come out smelling like cat piss, and God only knows what the fuck I’m breathing in there. I don’t really know what to do. I don’t want to flake on her because she obviously needs help, but that apartment just isn’t safe for me to be in

A lot of the time, elderly people end up living like this because they CANT take care of themselves or their homes and don’t have anyone to help or get them the care they need. And a lot of the times too, they don’t realize just how bad it’s gotten by the time it reaches this point

Oh yes 100%. There is a lot of medical stuff in the apartment, and considering she’s in the hospital, she’s obviously not physically fit enough to clean apartment. I feel bad for both the cat and the lady, no one deserves to live like this. She literally sleeps on a mattress on the floor that is covered with a tarp. And with the rotting food, there are bugs, especially because this is in Florida.

And I’m not really completely sure, this is more of an assumption off of the whole situation, but I don’t think she even has any family or anything nearby or just in general

Honestly that breaks my heart into pieces. I know it’s not your responsibility and honestly you don’t owe her anything, but if I were you I’d definitely at least TRY to help. Make a few phone calls and see if the state or a local org can get a hoarder or hazmat cleaning team out there so she can at least not be living in a biohazard ☹️
