no this is a real question. I feel like if you’re born and/or raised in the south you kind of get a pass to an extent bc it’s your culture too. like obvi depends on the exact phrase but it is genuinely not talked about enough that’s just how southern folks talk

internet culture is much more harsh about these things than most people can be irl. everyone knows irl that how you sound depends on who you grew up with and where. most POC live in the south so you'll all sound like each other.

So idk what one of these comments was on but no being from the south doesn’t kind of give you a pass bc of overlaps bc like the person who quoted this mentioned the overlaps exist because of slavery. that’s always my reason for why southern slang and aave are similar! the majority of black people are in the south so our way of speaking is bound to be similar

borderline pushing into the “you people complain about everything I can say and do what I want” which is literally also part of the problem). We’re well aware of the overlap but like I said the problem is thinking you can encroach on culture just bc of it, using aave that isn’t even from your region (which gives it away majority of the time), using aave incorrectly, spreading misinformation about it, pushing into the idea that “it’s just words”, etc.

like I said, there’s some overlap but we can tell when you don’t actually speak like us and you’re just doing it to seem cool. Don’t worry about there being an overlap bc like I said it exists because of proximity and you’re going to be able to tell the different between a word you grew up hearing and a word that’s not part of the overlap, the problem is more or less everything else I listed.
