Why is car shopping so atrocious. It’s either $5k for a car that might not even start, or something in my budget that has 300,000 miles on it GOD DAMN

i’m also in the market for a car and i can totally relate. i don’t have very many tips but if you’re looking for something cheap, like from a “buy here, pay here” lot, either buy it whole in cash or put as much money down as you possibly can. don’t make payments on a car that won’t last the length of the loan term

secondly, be firm about what you want in a car. once you’ve done your research, make a list of specific things you’re looking for in terms of the amount of miles, gas mileage, number of previous owners, certain features that the car may offer, etc. i personally have a specific car i’m looking for and i won’t settle for anything else. this forces the dealer to try and make it work for you

if you haven’t done research, i highly recommend looking only at Hondas and Toyotas and any brand that falls under them including Subaru, Mazda, or even Lexus and Acura. these are the most reliable brands when buying used

overall though, good luck girlie. i know the car market is terrible right now 😩 but i know we’ll both find the perfect car for us within our budget 😌✨

Yes, thank you!! I have my eye on a few cars that I really like atm, just trying to narrow it down. My current issue is with the used Hondas and Toyotas, they’re asking for soooo much money for like 80k miles on it. At least in my area, the prices I’ve seen rival some brand new cars from maybe less reliable dealers (like Nissan or Chevy), so I’m stuck with like… okay do I buy new or used for the same price

I have a Honda rn that’s an absolute unit and almost at 250k miles, so ik they’re reliable, but the maintenance is starting to cost more than it’s worth. I have a pretty decent down payment since I’m looking to finance whatever I get, but this is so annoying!! Wishing you luck in your search as well!! Also to be nosy since I’m searching, what kind of car are you looking at??

no i totally get that. i’m specifically looking at a Toyota RAV4 and they’re soooooo expensive. these sellers know that these cars hold their value well. i currently drive an ‘02 Cadillac whose engine is notorious to giving out at 150k miles. it’s now at 195k and has been driving with a blown head gasket for 2 months 😬 my mechanic said it’s irreparable and that i’d need to replace the entire engine so it’s definitely time for an upgrade. props to your Honda still going strong at 250k!!

Omg yess, the rav4’s are so nice though!! I have a CRV (2004), and despite all the problems I LOVE this stupid car. The size is great and probably similar to the rav…idk if I’d be able to go to a sedan after driving a bigger car. But yea, the check engine light has been on for mine for like years, AC doesn’t work, and the alternator is about ready to blow. Repairing it is going to cost more than it’s worth, so I’m kind of just driving it until it explodes. Reviews for these are great too
