honestly yikyak dropped the ball on the modding shit, like it's kind if insane that in the span of like 4 years they've only allowed for mod applications once

yeah most mods aren't paid like in almost any online space, they're usually just volunteers. Which imo, in this current clinate that we live in where damn near EVERYTHING is interacting online in spaces like these, its crazy as hell mods still arent paid

well… community mods aren’t made through the mod apps, they’re just the person who made the community. (iirc) the mod apps were just for getting the “mod” tag and special permissions for pinning posts and submitting ban requests. any community mod can remove posts w/o going through those apps, but (afaik) you can’t become a community mod for an existing page unless***** the creator asks YikYak to make you a mod for it

people underestimate reports since a single report doesn’t get posts removed 😭 if a lot of people report smth (especially if it’s recent), it’ll often get removed & the poster will be temp banned. community mods (like Clownhouse, our former mod) don’t see reports: those go to the app-wide mods

i do think there is power in numbers, and if we want the rules to be enforced the only real mechanism is reporting

half of this might be true but i know that originally community creators could only make communities and the whole taking down posts was only going through the bots until they dropped a google form for like 3-4 weeks and then we got the one mod, clownhouse 🤷‍♀️ after that yikyak never really gave anyone any other info for making more mods cause clownhouse mentioned that she tried reaching out to the devs at some point asking for more mods and nothing ever happened after that 🤷‍♀️

my predecessor just said she needed to have a trial period for me + have an interview-type thing before that, iirc Clownhouse didn’t have anyone she trusted enough to hand to YikYak as her successor. also, I’m community mod for one of my own communities, and I was instantly able to remove posts. not sure if that’s how it’s always worked, but it is now

yeah I’m glad community creators are automatically mods but that just feels like a bandaid holding together a shitty sand castle 😭
