It doesn’t mean “laugh out loud” literally just google it. I’m older and a zillennial, grew up with millennial siblings. Didn’t get a smartphone until after HS graduation. Before emojis were widely used we’d use lol to indicate that the statement prior to it wasn’t meant in a bad way. I was trying to communicate with the “lol” that “hey I’m answering in good faith and not trying to come at you” in order to have a good faith discussion. I was trying to communicate that to YOU lmao = laughing
