Celiac ladies, how did you suspect you had it and how did you go about getting tested? My roommate is convinced I'm at risk and need to be tested but I don't wanna self diagnose with something I more than likely don't have

Are you having other symptoms? My brother has it and it went beyond just GI issues because it is an autoimmune disease. He dealt with headaches and migraines, bad tooth enamel, fatigue, diarrhea and constipation (at different times), and being chronically underweight. I’m pretty sure his first step was our mom telling his dr about his symptoms and her concerns, so I’d recommend starting there. Then they’ll probably do a blood test to see if you have the genes for celiac, and go from there

i have a lot of gastrointestinal problems, and she thinks it's gluten causing it bc a lot of my diet contains gluten, idk if it is tho

idk what fatigue is supposed to feel like tbh. i have a lot of days where my energy levels are generally low where im just exhausted all day even when i slept all night, and sometimes i feel like im trying to move through water if that makes sense. i deal with a lot of gas pain, constipation, chronic acid reflux that medication hasn't helped, and overall feel icky almost all the time. my joints are also hurting 75% of the time, especially my elbows and knees

I believe an endoscopic biopsy (checking and taking a biopsy of his intestinal lining to assess inflammation and damage, among other things) was one of, if not the, final step that confirmed my brothers diagnosis. Definitely bring those concerns to your doctor and they can get the process started, and advocate for yourself. Don’t cut out gluten before getting tested though, as this can change how your body is responding and may lead to a misdiagnosis!!! (Our mom found this out the hard way😭)

I'm thinking about bringing it up at my next appointment, I'm just so scared of sounding like a hypochondriac bc i lowkey used to be bc i would think everything was wrong with me and im scared of slipping back into that childhood habit 😔

I didn’t see this until after my second comment, but he also had some of those issues, especially constipation and acid reflux, and that sounds like his experience with the fatigue and brain fog. Joint pain can also be related, since conditions like rheumatoid arthritis are also autoimmune. I’m no Dr, but it does seem like there might be some autoimmune stuff going on, even if it’s not celiac (or if it’s multiple conditions) I would definitely make an appointment and talk to a doctor about this

You’re so welcome!! I know how much getting a diagnosis and making the necessary lifestyle changes helped my brother, so I’m happy to help others get that too! I hope it goes well for you and you can start getting some answers and feeling better soon :)
