need advice. I’ve been with my bf since i was 15 (now 20). he was my first boyfriend. Our relationship has always been bumpy but we’ve never taken any breaks or anything of that sort. The bumps were almost 100% bc of him. Continued in comments

you're 20. there are so many more men out there, you will be friends with or fall in love or hate, but you'll never know if you keep on trying to change this one guy.

part 2. Texting another girl (girl bsf) for months insulting me with her, pecking his friend (who he admitted to having a crush on in the past, but now says he never actually did) on the lips, getting drunk/high and trying to hide it from me, not sleeping with me for 5+ months (multiple instances) but still watching porn, threaten to kill himself when i found the texts, being outright mean to me and after i call him out he’ll cry and swear to change but he will actually just be very sweet for-

Reading this felt like looking into my own mind a few months ago, I’m so sorry you’re in this position first of all. I was in a similar one, boyfriend of three and a half years. Thought I was gonna marry him, so did everyone else, but he was a lot like yours. I finally worked up the courage to leave him this February. As daunting as it is, I’d really urge you to do the same. It’s terrifying at first, and it might feel like you’re making the biggest mistake of your life, but it’ll be the-

part 3. a week or two before going back to being an ass, does not take care of basic adult responsibilities (like opening a bank account not controlled by his parents, getting logged into mychart, getting a job, etc)

part 4. but he has done some sweet things. he doesn’t take me on dates (like literally he doesnt) but he fulfills my small needs. he will get up to grab me things from another room, he’ll ask me about my day, scratch my back to help me sleep, help me pay for things when i got fired (side note: fired for filing worker’s compensation), carried me to the car when i injured my spine so i could go to the ER. So i don’t know what to do. I’ve always planned on marrying this man

Best thing you’ve ever done. He might love you, but not as much as you deserve. There are plenty of men out there who will take you on dates, comfort you, and love you loudly and without being asked. They’ll never threaten to off themselves to make you forgive them, they’ll listen to the issues you bring up and change because they want to be the best version of themselves for you.

You deserve to know that sort of love. You don’t have to stay with a man who doesn’t respect you or value your thoughts. It doesn’t sound like your boyfriend will ever be willing to treat you right, and he’s counting on the fact that you feel like you can’t leave him. Prove him wrong and take the leap. It will genuinely change your life. Sorry this is such an essay but if someone had told me all of this earlier I wouldn’t have stayed with a man who didn’t like me for so long. I hope you make-
