Hot take(for some reason) If you can set aside money to go out to eat and be there for 1.5 hours+ you can set aside money to give your server a decent tip. And if you can’t afford to tip. Don’t. Eat. Out. Even if you tip $5 it’s better than nothing.

Not tipping for bad service. A tip is optional and earned

It’s not my responsibility to pay their wage. People should be able to eat out without having to set aside money for more than they’re actually paying for

do you feel this way about your grocery cashiers, baggers, baristas, etc?

crazy cus in my country tipping is seen as disrespectful and taking advantage of ppl who scarcely can afford to go out. and they make essentially not even 50 american cents an hour.

I use a tipping guide to determine how much to tip. I usually give 20% unless the server doesn't check on us much when the restaurant is nearly empty or etc. In that case, I tip 15% as I still believe you should tip them something even if the service was terrible. But I'm a college student so idk should I tip more then that?

This! As well as, if you come to a coffee shop every day and order a $6+ drink each and every time, and DONT tip like. A $1, it’s just odd. You know this place has good service, you talk to the baristas, I think you can spare a $1 here or there

In a few countries it is. In most, it’s given for really good service. Like your reply implies is the way it’s done here when it’s not

but realistically how often are you getting genuinely bad service. if you get your food which is what happens 99% of the time, tip. it sucks that companies aren’t paying servers enough so the consumer has to make up for it, but that’s how it currently is. support your fellow human. you look like a huge asshole if you don’t tip and i promise they WILL remember you and talk shit about you

lowkey disagree for coffee shop just bc it’s not the same kind of service. def think it’s nice, but not mandatory in the way tipping a server is

No, I feel this way about wait staff who are making $2 and some change, who literally live off tips. If I’m feeling generous I will tip a barista but they make a solid hourly wage otherwise

you realize people like baristas and gas station attendants also get that $2.13/hr tip wage too, right? why don't you tip them the same?

I don’t think I’ve literally ever met a barista that makes 2.13, but when I do I will tip them :)

i was raised that 20% is standard and a good tip. if it’s incredible service you can do 25%, but that’s literally 1/4 of ur bill so idk anyone that would be expecting that

I don’t think it’s necessarily mandatory, my issue is only when I know regulars and they come by every single day without ever tipping at least once. It’s just odd to me, personally. Overall, it’s about the principle of tipping. I don’t think it’s anyone’s job to pay people’s wages except for the employer, but it’s just odd that you make an effort to get to know baristas, and come by every single day and get consistent great service just to not even tip once 🤷‍♀️

From most people, sure! And that’s fine, I don’t ever expect a tip from everyone, but it’s again, just the principle of the matter from people who come by every single day

so this only applies to tip credit workers? my state requires full minimum wage and has state minimums set higher than federal. so i don't need to tip?

and do you commonly ask servers their wage? cuz i've met people coming to my state from other states who got $2.13/hr (several baristas, gas station attendants, doormen)
