Once men stop remaining silent when their friends joke about this stuff, start speaking up, once more guys sit down and talk to their boys and hold each other accountable, than it’s not all men. I truly don’t believe it is all men, but I do believe that MOST men don’t say anything, they remain a bystander, all because they didn’t want to hurt their friendship.
i understand that, and you’re probably right that most men aren’t doing enough to prevent this stuff. since the whole cornell 7 incident, i too have had to hold myself and those around me to a higher standard. but what about the men who are doing a good job and genuinely respect women? i don’t think it’s fair to lump them in with the rest. that’s why i still believe it’s not all men.
I also don’t think that is fair. My best friend immediately stood up against his frat friends when they said I was “his bitch” (I’m not, we’re friends and he has a gf now) and it was just a small comment but he got serious and said “don’t call her that. we don’t talk abt women like that.” I think there are genuine men out there. But I also think there’s too much of a majority that make us feel unsafe, and I think a lot of guys underestimate that because they don’t have to constantly worry
No one said it was false. It’s trying to shift the conversation tho. It’s not about your feelings- it’s about the thousands of women who experience sexual or gender based violence everyday. Yes it was all over the news just like the one before that and the one before that and the one before that. What changed? It’s the same story again and again. Women get hurt. And men like you shift the conversation to your hurt feelings instead of to the actually hurt ppl.
DoorDash girl is in prison rn man despite the large amount of reports of other women experiencing the same thing. We get waves of the movement for women’s justice that surge now and then but if you’re not in the window of Jane doe or metoo or any other surge your story becomes lost- another victim our patriarchy discards. Even when there is public scrutiny there’s still no guarantee of justice and everything from the clothes to your story is torn apart to find fault in the victim- a woman.
I’m not offended. I’m a proud feminist. One of the most famous feminist peices of the late 80s or 90s called on men to do their part. Feminism is not just women’s work and it should’ve never had to fall on women to do all the heavy lifting of uprooting the patriarchy but it has. Instead of joining supporting or anything we have villainized feminism to the dentriment of our sisters mothers and friends. If you’re truly a man, fight for what’s right alongside women over focusing on your hurt ego
i’m not villainizing feminism. the patriarchy is real and feminism is necessary. however, i think feminist values can be upheld without putting down men who are genuinely blameless, including those who support feminism like you. i’m not saying the issues you’re talking about aren’t real. they certainly are. but i think we can address them while making the men who actually commit and enable rape the enemy instead of the entire gender.
Not all men started off statements where women were saying that men have hurt them. Because they didn’t say some men or frankly most men not all men became a thing. I’m not here to play semantics or demand women put in qualifiers and exceptions to the rule bc it’ll make me feel better. You are changing the conversation to be about you. In every other instance, it is about you! You’re centered in everything from seatbelt safety to the extra 30 cents to her dollar. Idc if it’s not all men.
Have you noticed that we have not a single recorded instance of men working en masse for feminism? Not even a single prolific figure? It’s bc men view feminism as women’s work or they villainize it. We should change that and stop redirecting the conversation. I don’t give a shit if it’s all men I don’t give a shit if it’s some men I give a shit that ALL women can’t take a nice night walk without fear of men.
i’m not making demands. i know it’s not my place. but i think that it’s important to be thoughtful about speech, even when talking about serious issues like this. even though rape is very serious and needs to be spoken about, i think it’s reasonably fair to not implicate all men for the sins of a certain group. obviously i wouldn’t cut off a survivor talking about her experience to say this, but i still think it’s worth saying at some point.
i’m not redirecting the conversation. i’m saying two things can be true at once: 1. feminism is very important and rape culture needs to be discussed and condemned. 2. framing these issues as something every single men is responsible for, including those who support the aforementioned causes, is unjust and frankly misguided. it’s also likely not a standard you’d apply to any other people group.
If we benefit from it, we are responsible for ending it. We are all responsible. All men until no woman. Not all men has always been used to redirect the conversation back to men’s egos. Until the day comes that gender based violence is eradicated focus on what matters- the actual victims. Lord knows they hardly get justice as is without us trying to pivot the conversation back to us. You waste ppls time and energy playing this game.
I dont understand why your here telling us what’s fair and what isn’t— being raped isn’t fair, constantly having to be extremely cautious to avoid assault isn’t fair. Idc about a couple select mens’ feelings and I’m not going to give them a gold star and a pat on the head just for not assaulting women. Treating other human beings with basic decency is the bare fucking minimum. You don’t get applause for not having raped anyone
