Why do people live where hurricanes or earthquakes are common? There’s natural disasters everywhere

I was born here and the chances of actually getting hit are slim to none. Most people I know have lived here for generations and not had any substantial property damage in said generations. That being said the other side of my town got hit last year and we were picking up pieces of the elementary school from trees for weeks, so take anything I say with a grain of salt.
