Every school is relatively liberal, and I have nothing wrong with attending classes with people with different views I appreciate the social diversity of opinion I just don’t like being forced to take certain courses (with nothing to do with my major) to simply graduate with ideologies that I do not agree with, and having to complete assignments where if I disagree I fail the class
I go to public universities because I don’t have the finances to pay for a conservative Uni. That being said as a woman, I don’t disagree that we are inherently screwed over by society the second that we slid out the womb. Sadly I’ve had to take classes where that ideology is put on me
The lecture I had to base several assignments on was complete nonsense in the way it was taught. Yes gender is created by man, but apparently anything can be a gender if you want it to be was the center point. Basically the same as the TikTok or Instagram reels of “fairy-self” or “clown-self”
but it is. and you just proved the point that it is with your masculine and feminine comment 😭 sex and gender aren’t necessarily the same thing. sex is biological, and even then, intersex people exist. non-binary is recognized as a gender because those people don’t fall into tradition gender roles, which is the exact point of gender being a social construct. it’s like how only men used to be teachers, now it’s a female-dominated job. men used to wear high heels, now that’s a feminine thing.
See the assignments were not really to make an argument tho. It was to explain how and why the professor was correct and what it means. To be fair it was also a online course so a lot of assignments were to see if you even watched the recorded lecture videos Kinda listening comprehension activities
You have male and female, which truthfully boils down to genetics. Because yes uteruses are not for all women. Intersex people do exist. However the presence of 1+ Y chromosomes makes someone male and the presence of only x and no y makes an individual female. Intersex people have some sort of variation of that, but it’s kinda like arguing people can be born with no limbs, which yes but that means there was something wrong during development, it’s a disability. Klinefelter SYNDROME for example
People are free to behave or dress or act however they like, more masculine or feminine, which is back to gender roles, but again, there’s nothing wrong with a woman who wears overalls and is a trucker for a living (a traditionally male-dominated field and considered masculine by society) but she is still a woman
you’re right, there’s nothing wrong with that. but gender expression and gender identity is not the same thing 😭 plenty of gay men present more feminine but that doesn’t mean they’re a woman. that’s WHY it’s a spectrum because it’s different for everyone. you might have masculine traits and still be a woman but that doesn’t mean the same goes for everyone else.
those are just neopronouns, which can be anything. I’m sorry if it was taught to you poorly, but “gender is a social construct” is considered fact in sociological circles—because it is a fact. it’s not an opinion nor an ideology, and it’s only political because people who’re uneducated on gender think they know better than professionals.
True which is why I particularly don’t like ASAB, because it’s an assumption. Many syndromes, while rare, do exist, and in that case yeah I’d agree gender could be a spectrum in that sense, but again it’s a condition. A syndrome where something went wrong during development, it’s not like eye color
also, gender ≠ sex. they are related because of how our society functions, but they are not one to one. gender has to do with how people perceive you, while sex is the sum of your sexual traits (which includes but is not defined by genetics. 99% of the US population has never been karyotyped, so sex is more defined by phenotypic expression)
frankly—as a trans person—I dislike classes like that in general, and dislike them even more when they’re taught by a shitty teacher. frankly, it makes sense to disagree with someone who can’t explain a complex topic that challenges views you’ve held your whole life 😭 it doesn’t mean it’s wrong, just that the teacher failed to convince you
I’m honestly curious, why do you think that we AREN’T immediately put into a disadvantage? There are many sources to prove that women are more likely to be exposed to violence, poverty, unemployment and hardship more often, as well as being commonly dismissed in healthcare. I’d just like to know which part of that sounds like we aren’t being screwed over
because yes, I know I made a statement about all schools when this post was about liberal arts schools. But I feel like it’s very relevant- conservatives expect they’ll be supported and validated in academic spaces even though modern conservatism is inherently anti-intellectual. How is this not in context?
