Is it normal for job applications to ask for your Social Security number? I’ve never had a job before and I was told that they shouldn't ask, but this place pays over minimum wage and is within walking distance from where I live, so it seemed worth it😭

HR here. Not normal (and potentially illegal) to ask for it on an application, but it is normal for them to get it during onboarding.

on an application is weird. if you actually got the job you would have to provide it when filling out a w4 for tax purposes and they may ask for id

It was required, and I couldn't turn in the application without it, and I'm stressing about getting a job that's walkable since I don't have a car, should I be worried 😭

They asked during the application. The section where they asked for my name, address, and social security number.

It was for a BBQ chain as a server. I went to their official website and clicked on the application through that.
