For me, it’s because of the many, many ways it can go wrong. First off, a lot of people go into these surrogacies with no contract, leaving neither party protected. I’ve heard of surrogates trying to get with one of the parents, demanding outrageous amounts of money, even leading the parents on up until the birth just to tell them they plant to keep the child triggering a huge legal battle for custody. On the flip side I’ve heard of parents, with or without a contract, tell the surrogate that if

anything goes wrong with the child, even if it’s out of their control, they will not pay for the surrogacy and/or not even take the child at all. There’s no real laws surrounding surrogacy so protections are minimal. And that’s all on top of the inherent risk of pregnancy

If others want to participate that’s up to them but to me the risks are too great to ever consider it for myself.

My only issue with egg donation is that you rarely hear about the risks. It seems like this amazing idea to make a lot of money in college- my mom even brought it up to me since I have relatively high donation potential but it can cause significant risks for fertility which I value keeping more. If you don’t plan on having kids- and especially if you have few health issues, ivy league/exceptional talent/high iq, or sought after features it can be an amazing option.

also OHSS is a high risk but at least in my case my biggest concern is infertility
