Moving to a bigger city soon and I’m kinda scared! Any advice/experiences I should look out for? (Especially with safety in public transport)

Definitely learn the bus routes and spend your off-time trying a few out if you can, just to get used to the system and to familiarise yourself so you’re not caught off guard when you have a time crunch. Also familiarise with their website/phone number in case you lose something or need to report something. Become familiar with street names around where you’ll be, and make note of landmarks, stores, etc. Other than that, look into events of your interests, check out social media pages/groups…

And familiarise yourself with the downtown, where important buildings are (courts, DMV, SS office, police and fire stations, schools, etc), and places you want to try out! Don’t be afraid to try a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, delve into a small, local bookstore, try out a few coffee shops, and have fun with it!

You’re going to feel new for quite some time. It could be years, if you’re staying staying (I’m on year 7 and I still feel relatively new to my area, but I don’t get out much). Be kind to yourself and embrace the little bits of chaos as they come.

In terms of safety— big cities aren’t as bad as folks may think. Every place has its issues, of course, but “safety in numbers” is fairly applicable. Talk to local folks and ask what the different neighbourhoods within and neighbouring cities are like. Locals are going to be great resources for acquainting yourself with it all!

Also, look into local food banks, shelters, clinics, hospitals, and storage facilities to know where they are. You never know when they may make a world of difference, so it’s good to have them well memorised, at least in name or area.

if u tend to keep ur phone in ur back pocket, start breaking that habit now! it’s a very easy place for it to get stolen from. start keeping it inside a bag, a deeper front pocket when weather is cold enough for clothes that have them, etc, preferably somewhere with a zipper or other closure
