Andrew Briggs aka “why do poly people always look like that” guy has a video essay on the topic that breaks down the issues very well. Personally, I think the hate comes from stories like the ones you find on Reddit where one partner (usually the husband) in a monogamous relationship tries to “open” it as essentially a free pass to cheat.

… yeah it’s toxic bc a lot of the time it’s just an excuse to see other people without breaking up. one person will just agree to it so they don’t lose their partner. i’m so confused why you think agreeing to something immediately means it can’t be toxic
