Sadly those types of books are being promoted online a lot bc booktok review channels don’t feel like actually reading the books anymore. There have been multiple creators who admit to “turning off their brain” when reading books they are reviewing. And publishing companies are looking at book tok spaces for what they publish so a lot of poorly written slop is being published over books with substance. You can have smut and the book be properly written but you aren’t getting that anymore

most modern books are written terribly because the average adult is illiterate. Not that they can’t read but they literally cannot understand or interpret complex plots
