i always interpreted it as tongue in cheek, like obviously it doesn’t mean anything and it’s just a way of jokingly avoiding responsibilities. like “i can’t do the dishes, im just a girl” or “i can’t fill up my own water bottle, i’m just a girl”. kind of like the whole “who said brunettes can’t wear jeans?” joke. bc being brunette has nothing to do with jeans. because of that i’ve never had a problem with it, but i’ve come to realize that most people don’t use it in that context
I can understand that. I think some people use it in the context that a good chunk if not all struggles women face are unnecessary and created to keep us oppressed so I feel it’s a joking way to express the feeling that it sucks sometimes having to jump through hoops to do everyday things. So for ex: If something that would be easy for men is harder for women to do based on gender discrimination then that’s when the phrase makes sense in a “why do I have to struggle simply bc I am a woman”
I get what you mean but I say I’m a woman all the time like that because why do I face all these hardships just because I am a woman but that’s different from I’m just a girl like a seen a video of a girls bf parking for her and it’s frustrating because girls can park YOU just can’t and you should know how I feel like it’s just used in such a degrading way and people do even see it
Ya I see what you mean. I think it comes down to self esteem and how far someone goes to decenter men and unlearn systemic misogyny when they use it. Like being able to make a joke but understanding the real life aspect it’s coming from and I agree not everyone gets it or it morphs into something so far from the original intent
