Tbh I think self-diagnosis for things like autism is not as bad as ppl make it seem and ppl keep ignoring the fact the diagnosis is an expensive, time consuming, and hard process for most ppl.

Same, also because once it’s on your medical record it can’t be removed which could be dangerous for some people

Self diagnosis is the first step to professional diagnosis a lot of the time! And there’s plenty of reasons why people wouldn’t want a professional diagnosis

That’s my biggest reason for not getting a formal diagnosis

My line of thinking is like you don’t just have a disorder till your diagnosed you know? Like usually you show signs or symptoms and once you’re evaluated in a professional setting and it’s confirmed that’s further confirmation that you’ve had it all along. Like ppl act like you didn’t have it up until the diagnosis point

I’m also curious bc if someone believes they have a condition, and they don’t have the means to get professional help what are they supposed to do? It’s frowned upon to say they have the condition but then ppl also complain if they use disability services bc they’re taking away from other ppl? I just think this situation is very nuanced

Not to mention there’s certain countries that won’t let you seek citizenship if you are formally diagnosed with autism sadly enough. There’s many valid reasons for not wanting formal diagnosis ableism is a sad and unfortunately real thing
