I just saw major major discourse about Pap smears on tiktok. As a cancer survivor, skipping cancer screenings is absolutely dumb. Pap smears are really not that bad as long as you have a good doc

I’m still gonna do them because I wanna catch it if I have cancer, but I had my first pap smear a few months ago and it was literally one of the most painful experiences of my life. I was in excruciating pain and I had to stop myself from screaming. I could barely sit down for the rest of the day and I was bleeding for days after. So I understand why some people would skip them because my experience was honestly kinda traumatic, but I’d rather be in extreme pain than have cancer go undetected

while i do agree, i wouldn’t say dumb.. that’s ignorant. BUT if anyone is reading this please don’t be scared of Paps, while it is awkward to have someone in you like that it’s for good reasoning!!! try to find a female doctor if you can, i have a male and i hate it everytime 😭

Yes!! I remember seeing a couple TikToks with people saying “no one could make me get a pap smear” etc, and all the comments were affirming it. Huh?? It’s a screening! It’s not done for no reason.

My doctor told me that they normally start doing it when around this age (I’m 21) and I’m actually terrified

Yes it is ignorant but imo I really do think it’s stupidity as well. Colonoscopies, mammograms and pap smears are 3 tests to help us find cancer early, knowing that and deciding not to have said test is ignorant but it’s stupid as well that’s just how I feel. Cancer is worse than any test. And please for the love try and switch to a female doctor for gyno it’s truly night and day

I had vaginismus for my first pap smear and it went fine. It was uncomfortable, but my doctor was very accommodating and receptive. If you don’t feel comfortable with the person doing the pap smear, then it’s worth finding someone else, but don’t just skip it

it's very very dumb to take that kind of risk when it comes to your body and health

That’s so horrible, I’m so sorry you had to go through that. I also just had my first a couple months ago. I’ve had other tests go wrong before and it absolutely can be traumatizing. But I agree, I’d do it again and again to protect my health.

Yes me as well. I truly think having a good doctor like that is important for tests like these. I can’t imagine having a dismissive doctor for a test like that. I can’t even really use tampons and I’m a stone top lesbian so I had myself really really worked up for the appointment. But my doctor was very assuring and in tune with my responses. She gave me a break before I had the chance to ask for one.

Absolutely. It is also an insane privilege to have these kinds of tests as there’s around 195 other types of cancers that don’t have anything like that. The only reason I survived my cancer was because we found it accidentally. There are no early dedication tests for what I had. There are around 200,000 deaths globally each year from the specific tumor I had. So to ignore such privileges is just fucking crazy to me

It’s possible. She was very young so she may have been inexperienced. Also I’m a virgin and I don’t really stick anything up there, so the sudden opening with the speculum may have caused the pain since I’m not used to anything like that. I also found other women online who said that they also experienced a ton of pain, and it never gets better no matter what you do or what doctor you have. Some women’s bodies just don’t react well to pap smears. So idk what case I fall into

In some cases it depends on the doctor, my gf’s first one was very painful but the second one barely felt like anything. Different doctors
