If you broke out in cold sores or only have issue in the oral area, and haven’t done anything sexual, chances are it’s HSV-1 which is thankfully a lot more manageable and less painful/embarrassing. But, there is still a lot of stigma about it. Definitely get tested to confirm one way or another, but it’s not the end of the world if you are indeed positive for herpes.

Ig I should also say we just started dating a little over 2 months ago but we are pretty serious about each other. I know it’s him bc it showed up 2 weeks after we started dating. I thought it was strep and got treated for it but then it came back and I got tested and found out it was herpes

I’m not going to justify a man but it should be noted that Hpv2 can be dormant for decades before showing signs. But I suggest doing it over text if you can’t do it in person.

I have HSV-1 and have since my earliest days of infancy. I get cold sores at least once a year but they’re thankfully pretty easy to treat and manage when they do flare up. Medications like Abreva (docosanol) have been my best friend and even prevent outbreaks from happening if I catch them as soon as they start tingling. Other meds, aciclovir, famciclovir and valaciclovir, can also be useful! I think they’re coming a long way with relief through medication.

It is sadly a very infectious virus and more than half of the people on the planet have it, but it’s thankfully very ‘benign’. Many just end up getting cold sores that itch and sting for a week and then clear up. Very, very few people have worse reactions. Most are asymptomatic far more often than not. Skin and lip care can help manage symptoms as well.

“Tingling” is one of the most commonly reported sensations that happens before a flareup. You’ll know it if it happens! It’s best to start using medications (like Abreva) at that time to limit the duration of the flare and minimise symptoms. I’ve been able to fully prevent the painful blisters by catching the tingling early enough.

You’re also the most infectious while tingling, during flare ups, and until the skin is completely healed. Don’t share anything your mouth has been on, wash your hands more often, and avoid kissing or anything else involving the mouth until after your skin has finished healing and there are no signs or symptoms for a few days. Just be careful and clean and it won’t be much of an issue or an annoyance at all. Time goes by quickly and catching them early can help speed the process along.

Thank you for your information. I did get tested and I have HSV-2. I’m terrified to tell him. I feel like our relationship is so good and I don’t want to ruin it

Your health comes first, and if he takes issue with it, that’s his problem to work through and not yours. You can still have a normal life and beautiful relationships even with herpes. You deserve to have support and care from more than just medical team as well.

You seem to know a lot and I’ve been searching for answers for a while. I might have HSV-1 but I haven’t been checked for it yet because it doesn’t appear as cold sores. It’s just that the corners of my mouth get cracked and flare up for about a week roughly once a month. It’s not timed to my cycle. It doesn’t physically look like cold sores and it’s been happening since one random day in middle school. I have been with my fiancé for almost four years and it has never spread to him. Is it HSV-1?
