I hate this saying. In the case that it’s used, it refers to not be able to do two things. BUT YOU CAN HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT!!!

yeah, the was originally ordered as "eat your cake and have it", and the phrase's first use emphasized the two different states of having and eating. now it's worded as if it's meant to be a process of first having and then eating, which is just confusing. picture patrick star eating his chocolate bar and getting mad at spongebob lol.
