OP is so right, white was actually a status symbol. it wasn't until the early 1900s that it became a tradition to wear white to a wedding. before industrialization, white was a very expensive fabric that could only be worn by rich people because of how easy it would stain.

She wore white to help promote the lace industry (white shows off lace better). Also, before Victoria it would have been bad luck to wear white on your wedding because white was used to dress bodies for funerals (primarily children and unmarried women).

On the subject of white and weddings, having a white cake was also a status symbol. These cakes would be made with royal icing (a frosting that drys to be quite hard allowing for in depth decoration). In order to make this icing, you needed real cane sugar, the more pure the sugar the whiter the icing. Cane sugar was very expensive, so having a white cake signified wealth. However it was Queen Victoria who made the layered wedding cake popular!
