I am 23 years old and tomorrow I am going to a GYN for the first time since one put his hands in me with no warning or explanation when I was 16. Any tips for handling this experience after the malpractice? Anything I should know? How does this work?

my best advice is being upfront with this new one and asking them to walk you through everything properly and tell you before anything happens, it'll help make the experience the most comfortable it can while building a relationship you feel comfortable going back to

Remember that you’re paying for a service and they cannot do anything without your consent. You’re in control and you can up and walk out at any time, ask to pause, or switch to a talking-only visit. Consider giving them a high level understanding of your experience and request that they tell you what they’re doing each step of the way. Do you know what type of visit you’re going for?

I’m so sorry you had that experience. I can say I personally have found a good office with an amazing all female staff. I would recommend researching reviews, calling the office, and getting females to look at you. You are allowed to say no to anything you don’t feel comfortable with and if there are students you can say you don’t want them to shadow. Make sure to communicate your experience and the privacy and extra care you need. A good staff will understand and comply to meet your needs

Um I don’t know, I didn’t really know there were different kinds. I think it’s just a “standard” visit, so talking, exam, and Pap smear? I genuinely don’t know

my ob asked at my “standard” if i wanted to get it out of the way then or schedule an appointment for another time so it was JUST a talking / info session

esp if it’s a new OB, it might just be an “establishing care” so for birth control or any other health concerns you might have.
