Not settling when my dad always responds within the hour, would insist on driving me to the airport at 4 am, sends me reels when he thinks of me, still knows how to curl my hair, pays for everything he can and calls to tell me he loves me every week

The current dating scene hits you like a bus when you grew up with a dad who actually set an example for men 😞

I love and hate how much influence dads have on their daughters’ future dating standards because on one hand situations like this are amazing, but on the other hand they can easily set their daughters up for failure if they fall short

Once my dad was giving a speech to hundreds of people and said “one second, my daughter is calling.” I only know bc my mom told me later - I had no idea. I was calling just to say hi.

My dad responds within one business day, would pay for me to be carried by elephant to the airport to avoid having to drive me, doesn’t know how to use instagram, doesn’t know how to braid my hair, pays for things and calls me every week

Hot take but I think women who use their dads as the standard for who they date are just as weird as men who use their mom to do the same 💀

Like of course he dotes on you!! You’re his DAUGHTER 🫪 his CHILD. Why are you holding your partners to that standard given it’s a completely different dynamic?

“The same standard” and it’s driving me to the airport and replying to my texts lmfao. Also the men who use their moms use it as a way to get out of normal adult things like laundry cleaning and cooking. Im just saying some things I love about my dad that he does to show he loves me. Im still independent. I don’t think any of these are remotely crazy to ask from a partner and if you think that then you may be a bad one lmao

Your parents are the first example of a man or a woman that you meet. It makes sense to see them as the standard. If they’re bad you want the people around you to be better but if they’re good you want people to measure up

“Knows how to curl my hair and pays for everything he can” is also right there. And yeah, I agree, momma’s boys who are looking for women to do domestic labor for them are bad. But I’d argue paying for yourself is also a normal adult thing…

Of course, I think moms and dads should be an example in SOME regards (what kind of morals a partner should hold, how to communicate well, etc). But a lot of what I see is more of “My parent did xyz for me so I expect my partner to do it as well”, and a lot of what’s substituted for “xyz” is just a parent spoiling their kid.

Yeah I think it’s more about how loved they make you feel generally

This is just a dad appreciation post after a shitty breakup bruh 😭 not everything here is something I’d expect from someone but after looking at how some man made me feel it just felt nice to realize there’s someone who’d do these things for me in a heartbeat just because.

I meant more to say within his means. Dad doesn’t pay my rent but if we’re out for coffee dad pays for the coffee

What are you talking about? Parents influencing their children’s standards and self esteem is basic psychology. If you grow up with proper love and care, you’ll likely expect that from future relationships. If you grew up in an abusive household, then that’s your standard instead. It’s not the specific behaviors the child subconsciously expects, it’s the overall environment and attitude.

To an extent it is parenting yes but I think some of it is modelling general care and kindness in addition being able to see good partner traits reflected in your parents relationship with each other

My boyfriend’s ex was a prime example of weaponized incompetence. I was stressed about a deadline and he saw her in me. He wanted to complete an assignment for me and I freaked out because I wasn’t used to it. My mom would sometimes help me with busy work (like assembling a diorama) but respected my autonomy and wanted me to be able to do my own work. While that is of course parenting and I can totally see where you’re coming from it’s also something I want reflected in a partner
