I got a 2017 Mazda3 off Craigslist (my dad came with me) but I don’t recommend doing that. Long story short the person selling the car had no idea how a cashier’s check worked and tried to essentially hold us hostage until she could “verify the check cleared” after she already signed the title transfer. My dad ended up eventually yelling at her to get her husband out of what was now my car so we could go home.
My man just bought a car and it’s a 2011 with over 100k miles on it and was just under 19K and was a screaming deal. Used cars are insane rn and ur budget is not super realistic for a car newer than yours that will not have a ton of miles on it (and therefore the issues you already are dealing with)
For those who are not familiar with cashier’s checks the way they work is you give the full amount of money to the bank and the bank writes the check as a way to verify that the money is real and won’t bounce once deposited. It was explained to the woman many times by both us and bank staff but she wouldn’t give up on “verifying” until my dad yelled at her.
i live in the midwest lol both my family and friends have gotten newer used cars for $8k-11k. my sister got a 2014 jeep w less than 100k mi for $8000 & my friend got a 2016 corolla for $11k w 80k mi on it :-) i also dont need a car immediately so i’m willing to wait and keep looking for an option that does fit my budget!
