Hello I am in medical school. Yes family doctors can diagnose & treat depression. It’s very common, a ton of general practice is psych. In the event your doctor thinks med management might be too much for general practice or something like that they may refer to psych. You’re probably young and otherwise healthy though so that’s pretty unlikely

My doctor office usually would have the nurse give me a clipboard and have me fill out like a 1-10 emotions I’ve felt in the last month or something like that and the doctor would look over it before she would come in. And they do take it seriously bc my friend told me she answered it truthfully and got put on meds by it.

The doctors themselves put her on meds or she had to see a psychologist first?? I’m just confused on how it goes bc my mom doesn’t really believe in this stuff so if I can avoid her knowing I’d love that

I believe the doctors did. I’m not 100% sure, she told me this when we were 14 and now I’m 20… but I personally was put on fluoxetine by my neurologist bc he could tell I was struggling. I would just ask them. They can’t make fun of you or tell anyone with HIPAA
