Last time I tried to end things with my BF he chased me around and tried to break into my apartment. He went to the hospital but it didn’t stop till I took him back. What do I do. (police said they can’t do anything until something worse happens)

I want to. But I’m a student and I don’t have the money to do it nor do I have a relationship with my friends or family. He used to be great and we moved states together but once there was no way out he started being terrible. He greed to get his own place last year but won’t let me leave him.
