because companies exist for the shareholders at the expense of the working class, and their goal is to just keep getting bigger. companies like doordash or google have essentially gotten as big as their product allows. they are synonymous with delivery and web browsing respectively. but that’s not enough they need to get bigger so they find a tech hype train to jump on and hope they can expand even more and become even bigger while crushing the little guy in the process.
to be fair “ai” as a concept is really new which is why it’s new on social media but these companies have been using machine learning models as part of their recommendation algorithms for a long long time. the last big growth in machine learning was i think the 90s or so? so they’ve been using basic neural networks for lots of things for a while but recently there have been a lot of advances that enable things like generative ai, and more efficient/effective models
the current growth of “AI” as a concept is mostly marketing to please shareholders and (fail) to get consumers on board. it also provides an opportunity to further expand their computational ability to be further entrenched in buying and selling information. it’s not necessarily some new thing so much as an extension of current practices in the tech industry which are enabled by the fact they regularly are ahead of regulators and use that opportunity to get rich at others expense
