You expect this one day to be your breath of air in a miserable life, and when it inevitably goes bad, you are sad. Very sad phenomenon in young women

For me, I feel like I always put everyone else before myself and I never get any recognition for anything I do. So when my big day comes around, I always hope that I’ll finally feel appreciated and people will give me the love that I give them all the time. And when that doesn’t happen, it’s heartbreaking and I feel so unloved and unwanted. I also just always want it to be really fun and then it’s underwhelming and all my plans go sideways

For me, the inevitable unstoppable passage of time and feeling like I haven’t accomplished enough for my age. Also having elevated expectations for the day and getting upset when it doesn’t turn out the way I hoped it would

Idk sometimes it feel like disappointment. Birthdays feels like their supposed to be this big thing, but it feels like something is always missing, or someone couldn’t make it, or stuff went wrong

I heard my bf and his friends saying something about “she looks horrible with that birthday makeup” like bye 🙁

I'm sad to admit I think for me it's a bit of internalized sexism/ageism, where like my value as a woman "goes down with age" because so much of society reinforces this ☹️ I don't feel bad about aging myself but rather others' perceptions of me and my value, which is really sad but I'm aware about I guess.😔

I cried when I turned 18. I thought I needed to have everything figured out and I didn’t feel ready. Turns out I was wrong

My dad left on my birthday when I was young, which obviously is a pretty significant experience, sometimes there’s something there’s don’t know about yk

I just feel forgotten even though I’m not. Forgotten, undeserving.

I cried on my 22nd birthday bc I was sent away to a wilderness camp so I couldn’t celebrate with any friends or family, just the other participants. They worked super hard to make it a great day, so the tears were a mix of missing my folks and gratefulness. I cried this year bc my grandma is getting to the age where she forgot to call, and she used to always make a huge deal out of calling and signing the birthday song, but I had to call her this year, and it just broke my heart

Yeah this. My 21st was my golden birthday and i didn’t get the sign or have the girls and have a surprise party and go to the bars like every other girl does. I literally just ate at a restaurant the waitress didn’t even acknowledge me, the worker at Trader Joe’s didn’t wish happy birthday either (they’re supposed to be nice tho right?) couldn’t even “do it” with my bf because his parents walked in on us. Just a bad experience all around

Me because every year no one wishes me happy birthday even if I let it be known in advance yet I wish it on theirs on midnight with a message.

This is so real. I always make an effort to remember people’s birthdays and wish them on midnight with a message and such yet they can’t even remember mine and we live together..? Also never do anything

That’s the problem, having those expectations. Treat it like a normal day and you won’t set yourself up for disappointment.

That’s fair, but also sucks to have to think like that. Idk, in American society it’s typically celebrated as a special day, so it’s sad to have to keep expectations low

That sucks so bad! I feel like when I was younger birthdays were great, but kind of after my 11th birthday they started to become sadder. Especially in highschool when I had like 3 friends. Maybe the trader joes worker just didn’t notice? That really is disappointing

no literally i know everyones birthday but no one’s mine. once for my friends birthday i got her a tapestry and a taylor swift vinyl she had been wanting it was like 70$ and when my birthday came around i didn’t even get a card from her just a text. i don’t expect a 100$ gift but it would be nice to at least get a card or something saying hbd :/

In middle school when you’d send everyone a birthday paragraph then when it was your turn they wouldn’t do anything….
